Former Academy director gets 27 months

Paul Smith, the former executive director of Mille Lacs Academy in Onamia, was sentenced Thursday, Feb. 4, to 27 months in federal prison. He will also be required to pay $91,689.69 in restitution.

A joint session of the Mille Lacs Band government has decided that Mille Lacs Band Secretary/Treasurer Herb Weyaus did not violate the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Constitution by participating in a decision to keep the name of Melanie Benjamin off the ballot in a December 2008 special election.

Man gets prison for garbage truck chase

The Brainerd Dispatch reported today that Randy Weyaus, 40, of Onamia, was sentenced in Morrison County court to 41 months in prison after he led police on a 57-mile chase in April, driving a garbage truck that belonged to the Mille Lacs Band.

Update — Suspect in shooting arrested after snowmobile chase

A 26-year-old Northfield man was arrested Feb. 3 following a snowmobile chase south of Aitkin. Paul Barron, 26, was being sought in connection with a shooting that occurred in Northfield on Monday, Feb. 1.
